Pursuit Variations (2019) is a work that combines experimental music making with empirical research. As members of a laptop ensemble perform progressively difficult gestures of the visual score using a trackpad, their distance from the target gestures generates sounds in a representation of the inevitable error. The results were analyzed to advance understanding of ability to control a trackpad sensor in two degrees of freedom. The composition involves notions of agency, performance, error, and noise in an exciting experimental moment.
